EAST COAST FACING PATTERN
This pattern was apparently started in the United States by Andrew Dougherty in the 1850s and was also being used by the English card maker De La Rue at the same time. Even the court design is a match to De La Rue's.
WESTERN FACING PATTERN
This was also a pattern being used by the English makers De La Rue and Goodall in the 1860s, The first appearance I have found in the United States was by Victor E. Mauger in 1876 when he started the American Playing Card in New York City, This was right after he had ended his business association with Goodall.
R & M FACING PATTERN
A Western pattern, but with a flipped Jack of Diamonds. This first appears right after Russell & Morgan started making playing cards in 1881. Was this because of Victor E. Mauger's influence in their card making? It will only be used by them for about 10 years (about 1883 to 1893) and also appear in card companies they are associated with.
